The Stanley Cup Playoffs are happening – It’s the Chicago Blackhawks vs the Philadelphia Flyers!

flyers-vs-hawks.jpgAnd here is your chance, as a Salisbury client, to WIN $100 at the St. Catharines KEG and add some fun to the Playoffs.

When adding a comment, tell us who you think will win The Stanley Cup, why and by how many games. Since my beloved Buffalo Sabres are watching from the sidelines this year, maybe another prize will be given for the best comment on the Blog, what it is or about will be decided at the end of the series.

If you don’t know anything about hockey or these teams, no worries. Just click on the links to easily educate yourself.  Don’t wait – your last chance to vote is by the start of game 3 this upcoming Wednesday night.

If more than 1 winner, a draw will take place for the prize.  The winner will be announced when the games are done.

Happy Victoria Day! May 24, 2010

victoria-day.jpgVictoria Day is always on a Monday, making this holiday a long weekend, commonly referred to as the Victoria Day Weekend, the May Long Weekend, or the May Two-Four (referring to a beverage consumed on this weekend). The weekend is also called the May 24th weekend, although it does not necessarily always fall on May 24th.

The Victoria Day Weekend is the first popular weekend for spring / summer travel. Lots of people open up their cottages, plant gardens, or just get away. Expect crowds at resorts and hotels and busy highways. Fireworks displays are common, especially on Monday night.

Plan ahead as banks, schools, many stores and restaurants are closed on the Monday. Public transportation will run on the holiday schedule.

Happy Mother’s Day! May 9, 2010

mothers-day.jpgMother’s Day is dedicated to the leading lady of the family. The whole world basks in the glory of the day, where children take immense pleasure in making it a special day in the life of his/her mother. While the Super Moms sit back and relax on this particular day, children take up all the responsibilities. Are you wondering when Mother’s Day started?  Mother’s Day celebrations date back to the times of ancient Greeks. While it was celebrated in a small way during that time, it gained popularity and momentum in the early 19th century and in the present times, is practiced in full force.

DID YOU KNOW…

* Mother Day produces more flower sales and more long distance calls than any other holiday? In 1992, AT&T reported that 106 million calls were made on Mother’s Day compared to 83 million calls made on Father’s Day.  But 27% more of the Father’s Day calls were collect.

* Back in the 1700′s in Shuya, Russia, a peasant wife named Mrs. Feodor Vassilyev bore the world’s most children ever recorded?  Between 1725 and 1765, Mrs. Vassilyev had 69 children from 27 pregnancies which included 16 sets of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets.

* In Yugoslavia, Mother’s Day is known as ‘Materitse’, pronounced ‘Materice’? On this day, there is a strange tradition of children tying up their mother, setting her free only if she gives them sweets and gifts.

* The world’s youngest mother is Lina Medina, who delivered a 6 ½ pound boy in Lima, Peru in May 1939 at an age of 5 years and 8 months?

* Interestingly, in most languages, the word for mother begins with the letter M?
